Wikipedia : This day (June 13, 1986), in New York City, died Benjamin David Goodman a.k.a Benny Goodman, an American jazz and swing musician, clarinetist and bandleader.
Benny Goodman : Benny was only 10 when he first picked up a clarinet. Only a year or so later he was doing Ted Lewis imitations for pocket money. At 14 he was in a band that featured the legendary Bix Beiderbecke.
@allmusic : The most popular figure of the first few years of the Swing Era, he continued to perform until his death 50 years later.
@last.fm : It is true that many of Goodman’s arrangements had been played for years before by Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra. While Goodman publicly acknowledged his debt to Henderson, many young white swing fans had never heard Henderson’s band.
