Wikipedia : This day (November 24, 1985), in Inglewood, California, died Joseph Vernon Turner Jr. a.k.a Big Joe Turner, an American blues shouter who came to his greatest fame in the 1950s with his pioneering rock and roll recordings, particularly Shake, Rattle and Roll.
@allmusic : The premier blues shouter of the postwar era, Big Joe Turner‘s roar could rattle the very foundation of any gin joint he sang within — and that’s without a microphone.
@rockhall : He was among the first to mix R&B with boogie-woogie, resulting in jump blues – a style that presaged the birth of rock and roll. Indeed, Turner’s original recording of “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” cut for Atlantic Records in 1954, remains one of the cornerstones numbers of the rock and roll revolution.
@last.fm : Turner made lots of records, not only with Johnson but with the pianists Art Tatum and Sammy Price and with various small jazz ensembles. He recorded on several record labels, particularly National Records, and also appeared with the Count Basie Orchestra.
