Wikipedia : This day (November 28, 1943), in Los Angeles, California, is born Randall Stuart ‘Randy’ Newman, an American singer-songwriter and pianist.
Randy Newman | Official Web Site : While Newman’s initial record sales were modest, his reputation among critics, fellow artists, and musicians was huge, and he enjoyed great success as a songwriter. Former Animals keyboardist Alan Price popularized his work in England and Harry Nilsson did the same in the US with his still much-admired Nilsson Sings Newman. Three Dog Night had a pop hit with “Mama Told Me (Not To Come)”; Joe Cocker scored with the hilariously lascivious “You Can Leave Your Hat On.”
Songwriters Hall of Fame – Randy Newman : Following in the footsteps of his uncles – Alfred, Lionel and Emil Newman, who collectively -scored hundreds of films since the 1930’s – Newman has also composed movie scores including Ragtime, The Natural, Parenthood, Awakenings, James and the Giant Peach, Pleasantville, A Bug’s Life, Meet the Parents and Toy Story. His movie soundtrack work has now earned him 16 Oscar nominations including his first win Song for If I Didn’t Have You from the film Monsters, Inc.
Randy Newman @last.fm : Newman is noted for his practice of writing lyrics from the perspective of a character far removed from Newman’s own biography. For example, the 1972 song “Sail Away” is written as a slave trader’s sales pitch to attract slaves, while the narrator of “Political Science” is a U.S. nationalist who complains of worldwide ingratitude toward America and proposes a brutally ironic final solution.
