Wikipedia : This day (August 23, 1927), in Algiers, Algeria, is born Martial Solal, a French jazz pianist and composer.

The Dozens: A Half Century Of Martial Solal : Solal is one of the oldest living legend of the piano, yet he can’t stand being bored, like a child who endlessly explores the eighty-eight keys of his main toy: the grand piano.

@allmusic : One of the finest European jazz pianists of all time, Solal (a unique stylist) has never received as much recognition in the U.S. as he deserves.

@last.fm : Solal then began composing film music, eventually providing over twenty scores. In 1963 he made a much admired appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island; the Newport ‘63 album purporting to be a recording of this gig is actually a studio recreation.
