Wikipedia : This day (June 3, 2009), in Chicago, Illinois, died Koko Taylor, an American Chicago blues musician, known as the Queen of the Blues.
Koko Taylor : “It’s a true feeling that comes from the heart, not just something that comes out of my mouth. Blues is what I love, and singing the blues is what I always do.” And, in many ways, blues is what saved Koko Taylor’s life.
@ allmusic : After a productive initial stint on Chess, Taylor spent several decades on the prominent contemporary blues label Alligator, going on to win more W.C. Handy Awards than any other female performer in history, and establishing herself as far and away the greatest female blues singer of her time.
@ last.fm : In 1965, Taylor was signed by Chess Records, for which her single Wang Dang Doodle (written by Dixon, and a hit for Howlin’ Wolf five years earlier) became a major hit, reaching number four on the R&B charts in 1966 and selling a million copies.
