Gene Krupa : Drummers usually had been strictly time-keepers or noisemakers, but Krupa interacted with the other musicians and introduced the extended drum solo into jazz. His goal was to support theGene with Avedis Zildjian. other musicians while creating his own role within the group.
Gene Krupa Reference Page : While working with commercial groups in the early 1930s, Krupa, determined to become a legit Drummer, began formal music instruction with Gus Moeller. Practicing eight hours a day, he worked on inventing his own rhythmic variations and patterns.

In 1938, after a public fight with Goodman at the Earl Theater in Philadelphia, he left Goodman to launch his own band and had several hits with singer Anita O’Day and trumpeter Roy Eldridge.
