Wikipedia : This day (April 25, 1990), in Philadelphia, died Dexter Gordon, an American jazz tenor saxophonist.
Official Site : It was in 1943, while in New York City with the Hampton band, that Dexter sat in at Minton’s Playhouse with Ben Webster and Lester Young. This was to be one of the most important moments in his long musical career as, as he put it, “people started to take notice.”
@Facebook :
@last.fm : He matured into one of the major tenor voices in post-war jazz an original player who was perhaps the single strongest influence on the young John Coltrane. He ranks with Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, and a dozen or so others as one of the modern masters of the tenor saxophone.
