Wikipedia : This day (August 19, 2013) in Brooklyn, N.Y, died Cedar Anthony Walton, Junior a.k.a. , Cedar Walton, an American hard bop jazz pianist.
@Hardbop : By the time he came to make his first LPs for Prestige in 1967, he was without question the finest unrecorded pianist in New York.
@allmusic : Walton wrote a number of excellent tunes (Mosaic, Ugetsu, and Bolivia, to name a few) that found their way into Art Blakey‘s book during the pianist’s early-’60s stint with the Jazz Messengers.
@last.fm : In the early 1960s, he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers as a pianist and arranger for 3 years, where he played with Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard. He left the Messengers in 1964 and by the late 1960s was part of the house rhythm section at Prestige Records.
