Von Freeman – Mr. Freeman Sr.

Wikipedia : This day (August 11, 2012), in Chicago, Illinois, died Earle Lavon Freeman Sr. A.k.a. Von Freeman a.k.a. ‘Vonski’, American hard bop jazz tenor saxophonist. He is the father of jazz saxophonist Chico Freeman.

NEA Jazz Masters : Von Freeman, Saxophonist : In June 2010, the University of Chicago awarded Freeman the Rosenberger Medal to recognize achievement through research, in authorship, in invention, for discovery, for unusual public service or for anything deemed to be on great benefit to humanity.

Von Freeman @ allmusic : While not a free jazz player per se, Von exhibited traits commonly associated with the avant-garde: a roughly hewn, vocalic tone; a flexible, somewhat imprecise approach to rhythm, and a fanciful harmonic concept.
