And the correct answers (in case you missed one or two) are:
1. “Neighbourhood” by Space is known for its ska influence. The energetic beats reflect this stylistic choice. While ska was not dominant in its era, “Neighbourhood” highlights its charm.
2. The Cadiz fiesta provided the lively backdrop for Cud’s “Through the Roof.” The video captures the festive spirit with local dancers. This fits the upbeat mood of the song.
3. Ocean Colour Scene released “You’ve Got It Bad” on their successful album Moseley Shoals. The album solidified their place in the Britpop scene, featuring this standout track.
4. A newspaper headline reading “It’s A Shame About Ray” inspired The Lemonheads’ song title. Evan Dando found the phrase amusing, forming the song’s narrative framework.
5. Karl Wallinger’s “Is It Like Today?” from World Party is a musical precis of Bertrand Russell’s A History of Western Philosophy. The song’s verses explore philosophical themes succinctly.
6. Bucks Fizz recorded “Heart of Stone” prior to Cher’s version. Cher’s rendition, however, achieved wider recognition, giving the song new life and audience.
7. Frank Brett, a bus driver on Cork’s number 5 bus, inspired The Frank and Walters. His friendly demeanor was celebrated in the song “Happy Busman.”
8. “Cigarettes Will Kill You” by Ben Lee landed at number two in the 1998 Triple J Hottest 100 poll. The song’s popularity was a clear hit in the Australian music scene.
9. After Kerbdog released “On the Turn,” the label dropped them, deleting their catalogue shortly after. This spelled a temporary end for the band until their revival years later.
10. A countdown introducing “North Country Boy” by The Charlatans includes the numbers 1, 2, and 9. This unusual feature adds to the track’s distinctive sound.
11. A remix of “Real Life” by Bon Jovi appears on the 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can’t Be Wrong boxset. This collection celebrated the band’s expansive career.
12. “Groove Thang” by Zhané samples Patrice Rushen’s “Haven’t You Heard.” The familiar melody lends a nostalgic undertone to the energetic R&B track.
