And the correct answers (in case you missed one or two) are:
1. John Douglas not only played guitar for the band but also contributed the sleeve painting for “Hayfever.” The song charted modestly yet remains a fan favorite.
2. The Quireboys covered “Brother Louie,” originally a hit by Hot Chocolate. The song explores an interracial relationship and its societal challenges.
3. David Devant & His Spirit Wife added spectacle to their performances by featuring roadies grating carrots, enhancing the ginger-themed antics of their song “Ginger.”
4. “Peaches” was inspired by Chris Ballew’s musing under a peach tree, coincidentally while waiting to confess his feelings to a crush after an LSD trip. It’s a quirky alt-rock gem.
5. In “Mum’s Gone To Iceland,” the band Bennet repeats the whimsical line “Thank God, Mum’s gone to Iceland,” capturing the quirky and humorous tone of their music.
6. Audioweb, with their eclectic indie sound, supported U2 during tours. “Policeman Skank…(The Story Of My Life)” stands as one of their notable releases.
7. Andrew Gibson directed “Share The Present” for GIFT, adding to the song’s introspective vibe with motorik riffs and vibrant visuals.
8. “Sour Times” by Portishead peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart. Its haunting melodies and trip-hop essence left a mark in the ’90s music scene.
9. The Wedding Present paired “Silver Shorts” with a cover of Julee Cruise’s “Falling” as the B-side, part of their ambitious single-a-month release strategy in 1992.
10. Prior to “Mess Around,” Redd Kross appeared on the Posh Boy compilation, The Siren. They were part of the early Southern California punk scene.
11. American Music Club’s bonus live CD was recorded at Slim’s in San Francisco, capturing their raw and emotive live performance style.
12. The View’s “Same Jeans” was Jo Whiley’s record of the week on Radio 1 due to its catchy, everyman appeal, embracing mundane yet widely relatable themes.
