And the correct answers (in case you missed one or two) are:
1. Carl Puttnam sings the refrain “Rich and Strange” 34 times in the song. It’s perhaps an unexpected cardio regime for a vocalist. The song remains a live favorite and even appeared in the band’s 2023 performances.
2. The melody known as “Streets of Cairo” weaves through “Hokus Pokus.” Previously best known for its mysterious amusement hall allure, it turns here to hip hop mysticism.
3. Metallica’s early demo bore the title “F.O.B.D.,” a nod to Soundgarden’s track “Fell on Black Days.” It predates their official studio album release with a raw hint of inspiration.
4. Adam Ant’s “Gotta Be a Sin” video exclusively features him performing. EMI is responsible for committing his criminally catchy act to a music video gem.
5. Schizophrenia is the theme in the Megadeth single, drawing from Dave Mustaine’s conceptual picture of mind-to-mind chats. Multiple Mustaines in a video amplify this fragmented self.
6. Chumbawamba embraced “Olé, Olé, Olé” in their 1998 chart entry, making football chants musically contagious, much like their tubthumping theme.
7. “Kowalski” by Primal Scream draws from the 1971 film featuring its protagonist, woven into narrative soundscapes with distinctive basslines and more than a dash of cinematic flair.
8. Initially pegged as a B-side, “Runaground” by James navigated its way onto an album compilation, surfacing to the surprise of living room compilations everywhere.
9. A song from “West Side Story” lands on an alt-rock B-side, with its show tune roots perfectly juxtaposed against contemporary rock’s raw tones.
10. Milla Jovovich’s video channels Maya Deren, a tribute to cinematic introspection flanked by 1943 surrealism and 1994 musical ambition.
11. While primarily the band’s voice, Layne Staley picked up a guitar for “Angry Chair” both in studio and live appearances. It’s confirmation of a multi-talented frontman.
12. Moby’s “Hymn” took on a new identity as “Hymn (This Is My Dream)” for single releases, an aural dreamscape beyond its album guise.
