Wikipedia : This day (June 6, 1991), in Malibu, California, died Stan Getz, an American jazz saxophone player who was known as The Sound.
Stan Getz – The sound – Official Homepage : On Sunday, June 9, Stan’s ashes were poured out of his saxophone case six miles off the coast of Malibu Beach by his grandson, Chris. The sky was clear and the water was still. The song coming out of the CD player was Strayhorn’s Blood Count. The yacht they stood on belonged to trumpeter Shorty Rogers, Stan’s friend from the Bronx.
@allmusic : One of the all-time great tenor saxophonists, he was known as The Sound because he had one of the most beautiful tones ever heard.
@last.fm : Teaming with guitarist Charlie Byrd, who had just returned from a U.S. State Department tour of Brazil, Getz recorded Jazz Samba in 1962 and it became a hit. The title track was an adaptation of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “One Note Samba”. Getz won the Grammy for Best Jazz Performance of 1963 for “Desafinado”.
