Wikipedia : This day (June 11, 2015), in New-York City, died Ornette Coleman, an American saxophonist, violinist, trumpeter, composer and one of the major innovators of the free jazz movement.
Ornette Coleman : In 1958, with the release of his debut album Something Else, it was immediately clear that Coleman had ushered in a new era in jazz history. This music, freed from the prevailing conventions of harmony, rhythm, and melody, often called ‘free jazz’ transformed the art form.
@allmusic : Although he, and Don Cherry in his original quartet, played opening and closing melodies together, their solos dispensed altogether with chordal improvisation and harmony, instead playing quite freely off of the mood of the theme.
@last.fm : Coleman is most famous for his albums The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959), Free Jazz (1961), and Skies Of America (1972). In The Shape of Jazz to Come, he and his famous quartet play solos free of a chordal structure, due in part to the absence of the pianist or guitarist that had been traditional in jazz.
@Discogs : Jazz innovator, whose album Free Jazz even gave its name to a whole sub-genre.
