Come Fly With Sammy (Cahn)
From ‘Its Been A Long Long Time’ to ‘The Things We Did Last Summer’, we have mixed 20 ‘Jazz‘ tunes written or co-written by ‘Sammy Cahn‘. It has Mario Lanza, Four Aces, Poncho Sanchez, Bing Crosby and many more.
Judy Harris: Call him irrepressible–Sammy Cahn always had a way with words. As a skinny, bespectacled kid, it kept him out of trouble with his parents and the neighborhood bullies. As an adult, his way with words made him one of the most popular and successful lyricists of all time.
Katz’s Film Encyclopedia : A classic Tin Pan Alley lyricist from 1935, he supplied lyrics for many films, often working in collaboration with composers Jule Styne or Jimmy Van Heusen. Of 26 Academy Award nominations, he won four awards. He was known informally as Frank Sinatra’s personal composer, having written over 80 songs recorded by Old Blue Eyes.
Film Reference : But movie music moved into different forms, and Cahn, ever the professional, adapted. In the 1950s he teamed with Nicholas Brodszky to write several forgettable songs from movies such as The Toast of New Orleans and Love Me or Leave Me.
Voice of America : “He was an extremely witty guy,” said Corky Hale. “His parents wanted him to be a violinist. As a little boy, he was playing the violin. He was miserable. That was not what he wanted to do.”
Wapedia : Much of Sammy Cahn’s early work was written in partnership with Saul Chaplin. Billed simply as “Cahn and Chaplin” (in the manner of “Rodgers and Hart”), they composed witty special material for Warner Brothers’ musical short subjects, filmed at Warners’ Vitaphone studio in Brooklyn, New York.
everything2 : Cahn spent much of the latter part of his life touring, doing a one man stage show in which he talked about the writing of his greatest songs and performed them. He also wrote parody lyrics for classic songs for corporate events, something many would regard as a debasement of his talent.
Jewish Virtual Library : In 1993 the Cahn estate established the High Hopes Fund at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. As Cahn had been a patient at Joslin himself, the estate’s goal was to provide hope and encouragement to children with diabetes while supporting research into the causes of the disease.
Atomic Platters : Believe it or not, civil defense had an official theme song and this is it. A key question remains as to whether it was comforting to the public that their government cared enough to retain the services of such top talent as Sammy Cahn and Paul Weston to write and record it?
