Charlie Watts’s Snare Marches On—Dry, Blunt, and Unbothered by the Groove
In “Backbeats,” John Lingan focuses on Charlie Watts’s snare—which, according to Steve Albini, doesn’t merely keep time but slices forward with unwavering insistence. Watts, never flashy, flattens accents and sidesteps swing, choosing instead a crisp, marching cadence that seems almost indifferent to the surrounding groove.
His muted, dry tone denies drama, Albini suggests, yet its sheer bluntness shapes the entire Rolling Stones aesthetic. There's no seduction—just a straight line through the chaos.
