Drummer Behind 200,000 Tracks, Sly Dunbar Checks Out Quietly at 73
Sly Dunbar, drummer and one half of Sly & Robbie, dies at 73 in Kingston. His wife finds him unresponsive; a cause of death remains unspecified, though he had been ailing.
Known for shaping reggae’s rhythmic core, Dunbar joined forces with Robbie Shakespeare in 1972, spearheading a rhythm duo that appears on over 200,000 recordings across reggae, funk, and pop culture’s most towering names—from Grace Jones and Bob Dylan to Simply Red.
His early hit? ‘Double Barrel’ at age 15. His legacy? Rub-a-dub, drum machines, and 13 Grammy nods—two wins included.
