Steve Cropper trades his axe for silence at 84, groove intact to the last note

Steve Cropper, guitarist for Booker T & the MGs, exits the stage at 84, leaving behind a catalog that threads through the Memphis music scene like humid July air. His touch on classics like “Green Onions” offers no theatrics—just clean, muscular rhythm work anchoring an era of Southern grooves.

Also co-writing Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay,” Cropper laces melancholy with restraint, all while sidestepping sentimentality. His death is confirmed by his son Cameron to Variety.
