Herb Alpert Tweaks Christmas Classics at 90, Skips Vocals, Keeps the Horn
At 90, Herb Alpert shrugs off retirement, releasing Christmas Time Is Here, a 12-track seasonal reprise that nudges familiar tunes into reoriented arrangements. His version of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” bypasses vocal theatrics in favor of instrumental clarity, signaling Alpert’s preference for melody over spectacle.
He reimagines “My Favorite Things” in 4/4 time and gives “Jingle Bells” a New Orleans lilt, all while claiming no designs on chart supremacy—just a compulsion to stay creative, horn in hand.
