Jack DeJohnette, whose drumming threads through Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and On the Corner, succumbs at 83 to congestive heart failure. He navigates free jazz and R&B-tinged grooves with detached agility, making subtle shifts through complex sonic terrain.
A fixture of ECM’s polished output in the 1980s, he oscillates between sideman and bandleader roles, steering fluid ensemble works without overpowering. His collaborations stretch across jazz’s more elastic corners, drifting between Sonny Rollins and Charles Lloyd with minimal fuss.
