Jackson Co-Founds Sony/ATV, Then Sells Out—in More Ways Than One
In 1995, Michael Jackson participates in a groundbreaking move, merging his catalogue with Sony to create Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Marketed as a co-founder, Jackson retains significant influence, though the financial script flips later.
Years down the line, his estate offloads its remaining 50 percent stake to Sony for $750 million, closing one of the industry’s most lucrative chapters. The move stretches back to a telethon visit that, while low-key, thickens the plot of corporate music power plays.
