2 Live Crew Loses Court Appeal, Lil Joe Still as Nasty as They Wanna Be
A federal appeals court overturns a previous verdict favoring 2 Live Crew, ruling they can't reclaim their catalog from Lil Joe Records.
The group had previously won back control of five albums, invoking copyright's "termination right," but the court now sides with the label, citing bankruptcy issues related to member Brother Marquis.
Without his support, the group falls short of the legal majority needed for termination. Lil Joe retains control of the sound recording rights, continuing its ownership of notable albums like 1989's "As Nasty as They Wanna Be."
