Gregory Porter, ahead of his Charlotte performance, reflects on the achingly familiar textures of Black American music—gospel, blues, soul—that thread through his work like well-worn denim. He credits 2013 and his signing with Blue Note Records as catalytic, allowing him to layer these genres atop his jazz foundation without diluting their grit or gravity.

Discussing his sonic palette, Porter insists jazz doesn't live in isolation, but feeds off the raw emotions found in spirituals and R&B. He sidesteps nostalgia or reinvention, opting instead for a collage of lived experience.
