Chris Rea, the Middlesbrough-born architect of blues-tinted rock melancholia, slips away at 74—peacefully, a family spokesperson confirms, after a brief illness. Known for threading weary-yet-wry storytelling into sleeper hits, he turns everyday drives and seaside longings into middle-lane anthems.

From “Driving Home for Christmas” to “The Road to Hell,” his discography hums with the disillusionment of late capitalism wrapped in pleasant guitar riffs. “On the Beach” remains less of a summer bop than a retreat into midlife reflection with toes barely in the sand.
