Post-punk meets riot gear as Gang of Four soundtracks Leeds’ late-'70s unrest
Amid soot-covered buildings and the shadow of the Yorkshire Ripper, Leeds in the late '70s becomes the disenchanted canvas for Gang of Four’s debut, Entertainment! Moving from a drab Kentish village to this restless northern city, the narrator watches political fires stoked by the National Front and south Asian tensions flare beneath swastika-tagged walls.
Police truncheons meet idealism on anti-fascist marches, inspiring not commercial ambition but a modest plan: reshape the world through post-punk dissonance and lyrical agitation.
