Flea swaps funk for free jazz on solo debut, throws in a trumpet for good measure

Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea unveils “A Plea,” the first single from his upcoming solo debut on Nonesuch. Clocking in at nearly eight minutes, the track features a free jazz/spoken-word blend, anchored by Flea’s trumpet, bass, and provocatively blunt lyrics.

Directed by his daughter Clara Balzary, the video catches him in kinetic, near-ritualistic motion. The ensemble includes Jeff Parker, Anna Butterss, and Rickey Washington, with Flea exclaiming “live for peace, live for love” over a frenetic groove.
