Raul Malo, part Sinatra, part Miami mystic, exits stage left at 60

Raul Malo, co-founder and lead vocalist of the Mavericks, dies at 60. His operatic delivery and gregarious physicality helped define the group’s fusion of country and rock, wrapped in a theatrical flair more suited to vintage crooners than Nashville radio.

Known for a voice that could tilt between velvet and lightning, he fronted the band with a stage presence hovering somewhere between a tuxedoed Sinatra and a Miami lounge evangelist.
